August in the Garden

Winter planting can continue throughout August.

We love August in the garden with the flowers of magnolia, michelia, daphne and hellebores looking gorgeous, the fragrance of boronia in the air and the first exciting glimpses of spring.

Winter planting can continue throughout August. We have new season roses, fruit trees, magnolias, camellias, rhodo's and oodles of other fantastic foliage and flowering plants to fill your garden with colour and texture.

For instant colour plant your favourite annuals - pansy, lobelia (ideal for hanging baskets or borders), delphinium (coming soon), viola, primula, sweet peas, poppies, dianthus, cineraria, stock, and petunias are in!

CONTAINER PLANTING:
Replace potting mix, replant, and fertilise.
Pots and hanging baskets filled with colourful flowers will brighten your patios and verandas.   We have a large selection of pots in many shapes and colours.

FUCHSIAS:  time to prune.

KITCHEN GARDEN

Plant:  potatoes, asparagus, garlic, lettuce, onions, spring onions, kale, celery, peas, beetroot, spinach, silver beet, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower...

Herb favourites - parsley, rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, coriander, chives, garlic chives, mint ...

Add more goodness to the soil when replanting - dig in iCan Real Blood and Bone, sheep pellets, compost or vege mix.

ICan Ocean Grow is a fantastic liquid fish fertiliser which can be applied regularly and will really get your veges growing.

August shouldn't stop you from having salads - plant seedlings under a cloche or plant in a container with fresh potting mix and place in a warm sheltered spot.

A greenhouse is great for growing your favourite veges all year round - come and see the top-quality range of Winter Gardenz Greenhouses we have available.

FRUIT - CITRUS - BERRIES

Plant a range of fruit trees and you'll enjoy fruit throughout the year:
Plums (the hard to get Luisa Plum is available now), apricots, peaches, nectarines, apples, and pears, including dual grafted.
Citrus - mandarins, oranges, lemons and limes.
Give them a sheltered spot with as much sun as possible.  We have Tauranga's best quality fruit trees!

Plant strawberries in the garden bed, vege patch, hanging baskets or planter towers.  For the best results plant into fresh potting mix and fertilise regularly with Tui Strawberry Food.

Fertilise new and existing trees with Ican Fruit Food.

Prune - Complete pruning of fruit trees - prune to a shape and size suitable for your garden and to produce not only a good quantity but also a good quality of fruit.  Prune feijoas, grapes, passionfruit vines and berry canes.  Protect large stem cuts from disease by sealing with pruning paint.

Spray - Maintain your regular fruit tree spray programme.  It is important to spray with the correct product at the correct time so please ask one of our knowledgeable staff or come in for a copy of our "Fruiting Plants Health Care Programme" or click here

TREES & SHRUBS

Plant new trees and shrubs:

Magnolia's (choose your favourite from our lovely selection), rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, grevillea, Leucadendron (fantastic for cut flowers and floral work), Pieris (Lily of the Valley), Ericas (white, pink, or red) ....

For the birds plant - coprosma, corokia, five finger, flax, grevillea, kaka-beak, kowhai, pohutukawa, protea, manuka, and viburnum.

Maples look great in all gardens.

Plant new hedges.  Fantastic hedging plants are Japanese Box, Camellia Setsugekka, Corokia, Teucrium, and NZ's favourite Griselinia Broadway Mint!  We have great plants available now.

Box Hedging - spray with Grosafe Free Flo Copper and Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil alternating with Grosafe Buxus Blight Fighter to prevent the spread of Box Blight (Japanese Box is far more resistant than English Box to Box Blight).

Fertilise new and existing trees and shrubs with Ican Slow Food 24 Month fertiliser.

Fertilise acid loving plants with Tui Acid Fertiliser - camellia's, rhododendrons, azaleas, daphne.

Prune deciduous trees to desired shape and size – seal cuts with pruning paste.

Prune hydrangeas to double buds and remove old wood.  Hydrangea tip - sprinkle lime for pink flowers and aluminium sulphate (Tui Hydrangea Blue) for blue.

Trim and shape camellias as they finish flowering.  Thin them out so a bird can fly through.

TREES FOR SMALL GARDENS

Beautifully shaped standards make spectacular landscape features - camellia, michelia, Mexican Orange Blossom and more available now...

Dwarf fruit trees and citrus are ideal for the smaller garden and also grow well in pots and containers and yield an abundance of fruit.  See our true “dwarf” trees – limited numbers available, so be quick for these!

Weeping maples are ideal when space is limited - Crimson Queen and Viridis will impress with their gorgeous form and colour.  New stock in now.

Crabapples, Cercis, Dogwoods and weeping Cherries are also great for small gardens – ask our team for help and advice.

MAINTENANCE

Good soil, feeding and watering is the key to great plants, flowers, fruit and vege production and overall garden health.

Fertilise with the great liquid iCan Ocean Grow fish fertiliser or the Tui range of Citrus Food, Strawberry Food and Rose Food.

Ican Slow Food is ideal for trees, shrubs, palms, but use Ican Fruit Food or Ican Fruit Food for Pots and Planters for your fruit trees in the garden or in pots.

Protect frost tender plants with frost cloth at night or spray with Vaporgard.  Vaporgard is an excellent organic product which is easily sprayed over foliage and provides up to 3 months protection.  It is also good to reduce transplanting shock.

Hygiene is important in the garden so clear away diseased leaves and prunings and sterilise secateurs, hedge trimmers etc before and after use (bleach is a good sterilant).

Pests and Diseases - check all plants regularly - it's easier to deal with them early before they take hold and do too much damage.

If fungus and bugs are present, they need to be kept under control with regular spraying.  We recommend:

Grosafe Free Flo Copper to control fungus diseases on all fruit, veges and ornamentals.
Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil for the control of sucking insects on all fruit, veges and ornamentals.
Success Ultra for caterpillars, thrips and leafroller.

Apply Blitzem, Quash (if you have animals) or Baysol (long acting) to control slugs and snails - particularly around new seedlings.

Mulch to suppress weeds and keep plant roots warm with Pea Straw Mulch or Daltons Mulch and Grow.

LAWNS

Fertilise lawns with an even application of Tui Lawn Fertiliser.

Treat mossy areas with Tui Moss Control.

PLANT OF THE MONTH!

Winter Roses - Hellebores

These are perfect for shady spots, pots, and even as indoor house plants.  They will flower right through the winter giving dark shady spots under trees or in the shade of the house a welcome and cheerful brighten up.  We have a fantastic variety this year.

Happy Gardening and remember, our knowledgeable staff are always available for planting and pest/disease control advice and to ensure you use the right products for your requirements.
