July in the Garden

LOVE WINTER!

Winter is here and there are plenty of flowering plants and beautiful foliage plants to keep our gardens looking bright and cheerful and when the weather allows it's great to get outdoors and enjoy the pleasures of gardening.

FLOWER GARDEN

ROSES:
Plant new season roses!  Prepare the soil first by adding our Magic Compost or Garden Mix and plant with Ican Slow Release fertiliser.

We have a large, comprehensive rose selection.  Be enticed by a New Release or choose an all-time favourite.

Prune existing roses.  Ensure your tools are clean and sharp, remove branches that are dead, diseased or damaged, remove overcrowded stems in the centre of the plant and prune to shape.  Spray to protect against scale, mites, aphids and fungus disease with Grosafe Free Flo Copper and Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil.

PERENNIALS:
Plant perennials - hellebores (winter roses), dianthus, gaura, salvia, cyclamen ...
Trim and tidy as they finish flowering.

ANNUALS:
For instant winter colour plant your favourite annuals - pansy, viola, primula, polyanthus, cineraria, calendula, poppy, dianthus, lobelia...  Feed with Ican Fast Food.

CONTAINER PLANTING:

Pots and hanging baskets filled with colourful flowers will brighten your patios and veranda’s over the winter months. We have a large selection of pots in many shapes and colours.

BULBS:
Fertilise garden planted bulbs with Fiesta Bulb Food.  It’s also time to plant your lilies.  Our Christmas Lilies and Asiatic Lilies are available in store now.

KITCHEN GARDEN

For winter kitchen garden harvests, plant:

Garlic, winter lettuce, onions, beetroot, spinach, silverbeet, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Calvero Nero (Black Palm Cabbage), spring onion, kale, celery, leek, brussel sprouts  ...

Herb favourites - parsley, rosemary, sage, chives, mint, oregano, thyme...

Add more goodness to the soil when replanting - dig in Ican Real Blood and Bone, sheep pellets, compost or vege mix.

Ican Ocean Grow is a fantastic liquid fish fertiliser which can be applied regularly and will really get your veges growing.

Ican Organic Vege Food is excellent as a top dressing on your flower and vege plants.  Dig in any cover crops you may have planted in your vege patch.

The cold of winter is no reason not to have salads - plant seedlings in a container with fresh potting mix and place in a warm sheltered spot.

A greenhouse is great for growing your favourite veges all year round - come and see the top quality range of Winter Gardenz Greenhouses we have available.

Plums, apricots, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears ...
Citrus - mandarins, oranges, lemons and limes.

Fertilise when planting with Ican 24 Month Slow Release Slow Food.

Maintain your regular fruit tree spray programme.  It is important to spray with the correct product at the correct time so please ask one of our knowledgeable staff or come in for your copy of our "Fruiting Plants Health Care Programme or click here

Prune fruit trees to a size suitable for your garden and to produce not only a good quantity but also a good quality of fruit.  Protect large stem cuts from disease by sealing with pruning paint.

Prune grape vines and berry canes.  Click here to see our YouTube videos on pruning berry fruit.

Plant strawberries - now is the best time to plant and they can be planted in the garden bed, vege patch, hanging baskets or planter towers.  For the best results add Magic Compost when planting, fertilise regularly with Tui Strawberry Food and mulch with Tui Strawberry Straw.

TREES & SHRUBS

Plant new trees and shrubs.  Stake for support if required and fertilise with Ican 24 Month Slow Release Fertiliser – the plant food that keeps feeding when you have forgotten.

For gorgeous winter colour plant camellia's, rhododendrons, azaleas, pieris (Lily of the Valley), tetratheca (long flowering small compact shrub), grevillea's, nandina gulf stream ... all are looking stunning now!

Magnolias – Vulcan is flowering now and looks stunning against the blue Winter sky.

Leucadendrons are looking fabulous and are fantastic for cut flowers and for floral work.

For the birds plant - Coprosma, Corokia, Five Finger, Flax, Grevillea, Kaka-Beak, Kowhai, Pohutukawa, Protea, Rewarewa, Viburnum and stunning Waratah.

Maples look great in all gardens and as Tauranga's leading stockist of Japanese Maples we have a large range available.

Plant new hedges.  Fantastic hedging plants are Japanese Box, Camellia Setsugekka, Corokia, Teucrium, and NZ's favourite Griselinia Broadway Mint!

Box Hedging - spray with Grosafe Free Flo Copper & Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil to prevent the spread of Box Blight (Japanese Box is far more resistant than English Box to Box Blight).  Alternatively use Grosafe Buxus Blight Fighter.

Fertilise new trees and shrubs when planting with Ican 24 Month Slow Release Slow Food.

Fertilise acid loving plants with Tui Acid Fertiliser - camellia's, rhododendrons, azaleas, daphne.

Prune deciduous trees to desired shape and size.  Come and learn more at our FREE Fruit Tree  Pruning Demo on 24h July 2022 at 1.30pm.

Move any trees or shrubs now if you need to, so they can establish over winter.  Remember to trim them back by at least a third.

TREES FOR SMALL GARDENS

Beautifully shaped standards make spectacular landscape features - camellia, michelia, laurel...

Weeping maples are ideal when space is limited.  Another gorgeous specimen tree is the Cercis Forest Pansy.

Dwarf fruit trees and citrus are ideal for the small garden and also grow well in pots and containers and yield an abundance of fruit.

MAINTENANCE

Good soil, feeding and watering is the key to great plants, flowers, fruit and vege production.

Fertilise with liquid Ican Ocean Grow fish fertiliser or the Yates Citrus Food, Strawberry Food and Rose Food.

Slow release Novatec is ideal for trees, shrubs, palms, fruit and veges.  As is the Ican Slow Food.

Protect frost tender plants with frost cloth at night or spray with Vaporgard.  Vaporgard is an excellent organic product which is easily sprayed over foliage and provides up to 3 months protection.

Hygiene is important in the garden so clear away diseased leaves and prunings and sterilise secateurs, hedge trimmers etc. before and after use (bleach is a good sterilant).

Pests and Diseases - check all plants regularly - it's easier to deal with them early before they take hold and do too much damage.

If fungus and bugs are present they need to be kept under control with regular spraying. We recommend:

Grosafe Free Flo Copper to control fungus diseases on all Roses and ornamentals.
Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil for the control of sucking insects on all fruit, veges and ornamentals.
Success Ultra for caterpillars, thrips and leafroller.
Grosafe NEEM for destroying colonies of eggs – use with Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil.

Apply Blitzem, Quash (if you have animals) or Baysol (long acting) to control slugs and snails - particularly around new seedlings.

Mulch to suppress weeds and keep plant roots warm with Pea Straw.

Happy Gardening and remember, our knowledgeable staff are always available for planting and pest/disease control advice and to ensure you use the right plants/products for your requirements.
